Enacting policy is essential to regulating the seafood industry—especially concerning harmful fishing practices and preserving marine protected areas.
NGO, Bloom Association, led a successful campaign to ban electric fishing in the EU, which went into effect on July 1st of 2021. Bloom is now campaigning to maintain and extend bans on deep-sea bottom trawling.
A growing number of countries including Hong Kong, Indonesia, Palau and Belize are banning bottom trawling altogether and others including Australia, Brazil, Canada, Malaysia and China have established no-trawl zones.
The Marine Conservation Institute’s Blue Parks program currently recognizes 24 sites globally for effective marine protected areas or monuments.
In June 2021, Chile has proposed a marine protected area in the Eastern Pacific’s high seas!
The UK announced they will trial “highly protected” marine protected areas across key sites.
