Hot Cups + Lids

Reusables

Festivals:

Allow and encourage attendees to bring their own mugs (BYO). Include reminders in communication leading up to the event.

Tip – Offer incentives to guests that bring their own mugs or thermoses.

Tip – Sell hot cups, thermoses, or mugs on-site if applicable.

Large-scale venues or events:

Use professional dishwashing services

Work with venue management or a professional contractor to rollout a reusable system for the event.

COVID Tip: Use contactless pour methods to serve beverages.

COVID Tip: Implement best practices to sanitize reusable containers alongside contactless drop off systems. That  includes washing takeaway containers at high heat and with approved detergent.

Disposables

When reusables are not applicable, choose disposable options that are compatible with available waste management infrastructure.

Approved disposable materials

Materials may include: wood, bamboo, palm leaf, paper, cardboard, agricultural byproducts, bagasse, miscanthus (“silver grass”), and other fiber-based options.

Remember to ask about and avoid PFAS.

CALL OUT:

Most hot cups have a plastic lining that makes them non-recyclable. Most disposable hot cup lids are single-use plastic.
